February, 2007 South China
Trip
This
trip was planned around the Fulbright Conference in Hong Kong in early
February and along with wanting to tour some amazing landscapes in the South
of China, the main goal I had for this trip was to explore the vast array of
ethnic minority music in different regions of Yunnan, Guiyang and Guangxi.
Flying into Shenzhen from Beijing (dashed blue line), we headed through
Macau then Hong Kong for the Fulbright Conference. We headed to Guangzhou
and caught a flight to Lijiang in Yunnan (2nd dashed blue line). After
Lijiang, our group split up and I headed to Dali (Red Line) and the
surrounding area, to do some hiking and meet up with my friend Chen Yu (Yizhu,
from Beijing) to spend the Chinese New Year with some other friends and her
family. We visited some local villages (Huizhu, Yizhu) before heading into
the mountains (closer to the Burma boarder) to visit a remote Yizhu village.
After. we all then headed to Kunming and I caught a flight to Guiyang in
Guizhou Province, met up with Alex (a Fulbrighter Studying Tourism in
Guizhou). After a few days in Anshun, met up with Alex again and went to
Eastern Guizhou; the heart of some the most diverse ethinic villages in all
of China. I took off on my own again in search of music in different
villages (went to about 15 in all) and slowly made my way southeast, meeting
Peijian, Yingxuan (from Guangzhou) and Taotao (from Beijing) along the way.
Eventually we made our way down to Guangxi Province, Yangshuo and the
amazing kaste mountains. I headed eventually back to Guangdong and stayed
with Peijian and Yingxuan for a few days in Guangzhou, hearing some amazing
Cantonese Opera arias, and learning to cook some "Guangdong" style
food, before heading back to Beijing. Plenty of pictures and some field
recordings below! PHOTOS
